Weekend warrant writing returns to Bradley Juvenile Department

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Transferring weekend warrant writing duties from the Circuit Court clerk to the Juvenile Justice Department worked well last weekend, officials said Monday.

That same day, the Bradley County Commission put its stamp of approval on the transfer of duties.

“It’s economical. It’s feasible. There’s no extra cost to the county,” said Circuit Court Clerk Gayla Miller.

Writing weekend warrants when they are needed by police officers was moved to the Circuit Court clerk’s office several years ago from the Juvenile Department.

Earning $100 a weekend, the part-time warrant writers, however, were overwhelmed by the growing number of calls. The Juvenile Department officers took over the duty last weekend.

“They wrote 29 warrants and they did beautifully,” Mrs. Miller said.

The transfer makes sense, she said, because the Juvenile Division is already on duty around the clock, seven days a week, and has a facility where officers can go to get warrants written when they need them.

In other business during a short County Commission meeting Monday, Chairman Louie Alford said a commission retreat will be held after the elections on Aug. 5 to get acquainted with new commissioners.

The commission also approved transferring some old athletic field lighting to other departments that sought them.

Finance Committee Chairman Ed Elkins said he hopes those departments understand the lighting is old and may have maintenance issues that affect their budgets.

County Mayor D. Gary Davis also said Bradley has achieved the highest level of the Governor’s Three Star program, giving it a boost in community development and state grant benefits.
