Assistant principal arrested for being absent from court

An assistant principal at Howard School of Academics and Technology was arrested Tuesday after failing to show up in court to testify.

Mark Smith failed to appear in court June 14 and again Tuesday in a case against two Howard students involved in a cafeteria fight in February.

Hamilton County General Sessions Judge Bob Moon said that, when he issued the warrant for Mr. Smith’s arrest, Howard principal Dr. Paul Smith went and brought his colleague to the courthouse.

When Mr. Smith appeared in court several hours later, Judge Moon continued the case until September and ordered him to spend two days picking up trash. Mr. Smith also will have to appear in court again Aug. 3 as a witness for the original case.

Mr. Smith, Dr. Smith and Hamilton County Board of Education attorney Scott Bennett could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Judge Moon said he was disappointed because he felt Mr. Smith was showing a bad example to his students.

“I take being truant in court a little more seriously than some people take being truant in a classroom,” he said.

“This was irresponsible.”
