Three new principals join Hamilton County Schools

Hamilton County Schools officials announced the assignment of three new principals for next year.

Dr. Justin Robertson, Dr. Tom McCullough and Janice Scott will assume the leadership of Brown Middle, Signal Mountain Middle High School and Snow Hill Elementary Schools, respectively.

“We are excited about these qualified individuals leading our schools,” said Superintendent Jim Scales. “I know they have the skills and talent to help our schools move to the next level.”

Dr. Justin Robertson will succeed retiring principal John Stewart at Brown Middle School on July 1.

A Chattanooga native, Dr. Robertson began his teaching career at Boyd Buchanan School in 2000 before moving to Memphis as a history teacher at Germantown High School in 2002. He moved back to Chattanooga in 2008 as assistant principal at Normal Park Museum Magnet Upper School.

Dr. Robertson received a bachelor of arts in history from Lipscomb University and his masters of education and doctor of education at Union University in 2004 and 2008, respectively.

On July 1, Dr. Tom McCullough will officially assume the position of principal at Signal Mountain Middle High School, where he has served as interim principal since September 2009.

He began teaching math and science at East Ridge and Hixson High schools from 1969 to 1975, before becoming assistant principal of Hixson High School. He was promoted to principal of Hixson High in 1982.

In 1990, he left to be dean of instruction at Chattanooga State Community College. In 1998, he became superintendent of Chattooga County Schools before moving to Early County Schools in Blakely, Ga., as superintendent in 2001. He opened David Brainerd in 2004.

Dr. McCullough received his masters in education administration from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and his doctorate from Vanderbilt University in 1986.

Janice Scott, who is currently assistant principal at East Brainerd Elementary School, has been named the new principal of Snow Hill Elementary, effective July 1. Ms. Scott replaces Shane Harwood, who is moving to Nolan Elementary on Signal Mountain.

Ms. Scott began her career in education as a special education teacher in Nashville in 1978.

She moved to Rivermont Elementary in Hamilton County in 1981. In 1997 she transitioned to become a Title I teacher before taking on a comprehensive development class at McConnell Elementary in 2000. She was promoted to assistant principal at East Brainerd Elementary in 2007.
