McGary criticized for language

City Councilman Andraé McGary took heat Tuesday night from a Chattanooga resident for using the “N” word on his radio show, “Live and Local.”

Maurice Lewis, an East Brainerd resident and retired Boston broadcaster, lambasted Mr. McGary for not coming to committee meetings, saying the councilman was shirking his duties.

“More egregious is Mr. McGary’s use of the ‘N’ word on his recent broadcast,” Mr. Lewis said.

Mr. Lewis, who is black, said a white person would be criticized for using such language and that a black council member should be held to the same standard.

Mr. McGary, who also is black, acknowledged that he used the word twice on the program, once while describing an incident involving racism toward the late songstress Lena Horne and another time involving racism toward himself, he said.
