Our irresponsible Congress

One of the major responsibilities of Congress, as spelled out in the Constitution of the United States, is to provide for the finances of our national government. Very unfortunately, however, Congress is not as responsible as it should be.

Congress votes spending. Congress votes taxes. But Congress is taxing too much — and yet is spending far more.

That’s why we have a national debt of $13 trillion — on which we have to pay hundreds of billions of our tax dollars in interest each year.

In this year alone, Congress is expecting to spend $1.5 trillion more than it has coming in — adding to the huge national debt. That means we will have to pay taxes to cover the interest on the growing debt, and eventually will have to pay the debt itself.

Do you think Congress is providing responsible financial leadership?

Nobody wants higher taxes. Nobody wants higher debt. So doesn’t that mean Congress should cut lots of unnecessary and unwise spending?
