Andy Shim had more than two hours to think about a four-foot putt.
A heavy thunderstorm delayed action in the Ringgold Telephone Junior All-Star on Wednesday at WindStone Golf Club.
Shim returned from the delay roll in the putt for birdie on No. 10 which started a solid streak on the back which gave him the second-round lead.
Shim, from Lawrenceville, Ga, shot a 2-under 68 and owns sole possession of first place at 3 under under.
“On the front, I was trying to make birdie but I just wasn’t able to get one,” Shim told the AJGA. I kept trying to be patient by saying I would get a birdie the next time. I just kept thinking I was going to make birdies.”
Shim made six birdies — five after the delay — and four bogeys in his round. He leads Brandon Pierce of Covington, La., by one shot. Augusta’s Greyson Sigg, William Martinez of Austin, Texas, and Christopher Guglielmo of Cumming, Ga., are three shots off the lead in the tournament designed for AJGA newcomers ages 12-15.
“I’m trying to win and I’m going to try to be consistent tomorrow because I think I’m in a good spot now,” Shim said. “If I didn’t play well today, it was going to be hard to get to the top, so I was just trying to make a lot of birdies.”
Lacie York of Kingsport, Tenn., shot even on Wednesday and shares the girls lead with Rachel Dai of Suwanee, Ga., at 1 over. Hee Wook Choi of San Diego is one stroke back, Michaela Owen of Alpharetta and Kay Harris of St. Simon’s Island, Ga., are two shots off the lead.
