Session focuses on tracing ancestry

Charles A. “Chuck” Sherrill, state librarian and archivist, will lead a program on genealogical research Saturday in Tracy City, Tenn.

His lecture, “Turning Over Every Stone: How To Research Your Family History,” is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. CDT at the Grundy County Heritage Center, 465 Railroad Ave.

His focus, according to participant Jackie Layne Partin, will be “on exactly how to go about finding one’s ancestors and the family histories they left for us.”

Any newspaper clipping, card or letter tucked away in a trunk is “like a message in a glass bottle,” Partin said. “Every photograph in your grandparents’ albums tells a story. … Mr. Sherrill will lead us down a path with how-to instructions planted along the way.”

With Sherill’s help, participants will learn “the best way to begin, the pitfalls and the reasons for enduring when we come up against a stone wall,” she said.
