Lefty looking for Open win

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Marguerite Feeney had one of her regulars stop in for eggs benedict at Toasties Cafe on Wednesday morning.

Well, Phil Mickelson can really only be called a regular when he’s in town playing Pebble Beach or take a whirl around Cypress Point as a final warmup to the U.S. Open as he did on Wednesday to celebrate his 40th birthday.

“He’s wonderful, he’s so genuine and I love him,” Feeney said as the local lunch crowd started to fill the couple dozen tables. “I’m definitely rooting for him to win. I’d love it.”

So would Mickelson.

He has finished second at the U.S. Open five times since he began his professional career in 1992 in this event at this venue. He has three Masters victories, but the U.S. Open is the trophy Mickelson wants more than any other.
