Step-by-step: How to create a nun’s habit

"Sister Act" director and costumer designer Scott Dunlap irons a nun costume at the Chattanooga Theatre Centre.

Kitty Murakami hangs costumes in the backroom work area at the Chattanooga Theatre Centre.

Actress Beth Gumnick, who plays Mother Superior in "Sister Act," wears the first layer of her costume.

Here, Scott Dunlap helps Gumnick with the wimple, also known as a guimpe, the white-fabric piece that surrounds the nun's face and neck and covers her shoulders and upper chest.

Here, adjustments are made to the scapular, the apron that hangs down both the front and the back of a the holy habit, or tunic.

More adjustments to the wimple.

Dunlap is placing what he calls "origami with fabric," part of the coif, or headress, for nuns. The standing-up parts will be folded down.

More adjustments to the coif.

All the flaps of the coif have been turned down and Dunlap is working on the top so it will lay flat.

Satisfied with the coif, Dunlap begins to attach the veil, which will hang down on the sides and back of the head.

More adjustments to the veil so it will lay smoothly.

Even more tinkering with the veil.

The final product.
