Since the advent of the contemporary studio art glass movement in the early 1960s, glass-blowers have continually surprised and delighted art lovers with their creations.

One of these glass artists is Stephen Rolfe Powell. A retrospective of his work, featuring pieces created during the past 20 years, opens June 27 at the Hunter Museum of American Art.

Powell, who is a native of Birmingham, Ala., was initially a painter and received his bachelor’s degree from Centre College. About 10 years later, he began graduate studies in ceramics at Louisiana State University. Only one year after receiving his master of fine arts degree in 1983, he took up glass blowing and has never looked back.
