Q: What’s the best way to train a puppy not to jump up on people?
A: As with any behavior modification, consistency is the key. If we tolerate jumping up some of the time, or if one family member encourages it, we are rewarding undesirable behavior. This can create “stealth jumpers,” puppies who jump on your back or at a high speed when they’re confused or excited. The best way to create consistency is to teach a desirable behavior to replace the undesirable one. A simple sit-and-stay can solve all of your jumping problems. Once your puppy learns what you expect, the jumping will stop. Be consistent and reward your puppy only when his feet are on the floor. Go down to the puppy to cuddle and play. Don’t make him come up to you. Never allow anyone to let the puppy jump up, and never reward or praise him for jumping. If you do not have enough experience to teach your puppy this behavior, enroll in an obedience class. It will be the best money you ever spent.
