‘Wild River’ screening is Tuesday

An encore showing of “Wild River” is scheduled Tuesday at the Museum Center at Five Points in Cleveland, Tenn.

The screening is among the last in a series of events celebrating the 1960 release of the movie, which was filmed in Bradley County in 1959. Shooting took place primarily in Charleston and McDonald, as well as Harrison in Hamilton County.

Some 200 locals were cast for speaking parts or as extras in an effort by director Elia Kazan to capture the authenticity of the rural South before World War II. “Wild River” followed a young field administrator who comes to rural Tennessee to oversee the building of a dam for the Tennessee Valley Authority. It stars Montgomery Clift, Lee Remick and Jo Van Fleet.

Tuesday’s screening will take place in the museum’s Cultural Center. Admission is free. Popcorn and sodas will be for sale.

Although the movie is unavailable for public rental, the Museum Center has found a source that can provide DVDs. Cost is $40 plus tax. Orders will be accepted at the museum, 200 E. Inman St., or by phone at 423-339-5745.
