Hamilton County: Legislative bill to change WWTA voting is delayed

NASHVILLE – A House panel this morning delayed consideration of legislation to grant more voting weight to the seven cities that are members of the Hamilton County Water and Wastewater Treatment Authority.

“Some issues were brought to my attention early this morning regarding this bill, and I’ve got some questions,” Rep. Eric Swafford, R-Pikeville, told the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Vince Dean, R-East Ridge.

Rep. Swafford requested the delay during a meeting of the Local Government Subcommittee of the State and Local Government Committee.

“I am at the committee’s mercy,” said Rep. Dean, a former East Ridge mayor.

The WWTA has 12 members, but the seven cities on the board can be easily outvoted by the five members that represent Hamilton County.
