Tennessee: Disclosure bill for LLCs dies in House

NASHVILLE – A bill requiring limited liability companies contracting with local governments to disclose the names of all partners died today in the House.

The bill was halted by a voice vote in a meeting of the House Local Government Subcommittee.

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Frank Nicely, R-Strawberry Plains, said LLCs currently do not have to disclose partners, calling it a “recipe for corruption” when they do business with government. The bill would not have applied to LLCs that don’t receive local government funds.

The corruption assertion drew criticism from Rep. Ben West, D-Nashville, who noted he has several LLCs, which he said are on bid lists but do not do business with the state or Davidson County.

“I don’t resent what you’re doing,” Rep. West said. “I resent your implication.”
