The GPS softball team left the Soddy Lake Kids’ Park on Tuesday with a lot more bad news than just an 8-0 loss to Soddy-Daisy.
It was determined Wednesday that first baseman Morgan Lane, who left Tuesday’s game in the bottom of the first inning after a collision with a runner headed toward first, has a torn ligament and hairline farcture in her left elbow. She’s expected to be out at least six weeks.
GPS shortstop and Tennessee signee Tory Lewis also suffered an injury while making the tag on an attempted steal in the second inning. Although she stayed in and finished the game, the impact has left Lewis with a sprained MCL and a bone bruise on her knee. Coach Susan Crownover said she may miss as many as three weeks, perhaps more if there is a meniscus tear.
“It was not a good day for the Bruisers,” Crownover said. “We’re a M-A-S-H unit right now.”
The Bruisers won 5-0 Thursday at Walker Valley.
Also, the Times Free Press mistakenly reported in last Saturday’s edition that GPS catcher Jackie Baird was committed to play softball next season at the University of Tennessee. Baird had revoked her pledge and now is committed to play at East Tennessee State.
