A group of musicians hoping to re-energize Chattanooga’s classical music scene for younger audiences will offer an introductory concert by three of its members Thursday at UTC.
Known as Trio Tresillo, the musicians are pianist/composer Tim Hinck, clarinetist Nikolasa Tejero and flutist Julie Hobbs. They will premiere Hinck’s new composition, “Old Man With Turnip,” a 12-minute piece he describes as “a sort of dark comedy dealing with a range of human emotions and experience.”
“While this is really absolute music — expressionist music, really — the visuals of the stage production will have elements of a vague plot-line, and audience members will connect with allusions to myths and legends from various world religions,” he said.
In addition to the musicians, the performance will draw on the talents of dancer Benjamin Elmore and local artists Zach McDonald and Sahale Jensen for stage design and multimedia elements.
“This concert follows ideals of my philosophy that for concert music to connect with younger audiences, the format must be shorter, the atmosphere more relaxed and the content must be more powerful, visceral and experimental,” Hinck said.
Other music on the program includes works by Jacques Ibert, Libby Larsen, Kirk O’Riordan and Alec Wilder.
The musicians hope to attract a younger crowd to this 45-minute concert, Hinck said. Admission is free, and dress is casual.
This summer, the full ensemble, dubbed Dekacophony, will debut. It comprises 10 “young and energetic musicians … gearing up for a series of shows that will change everyone’s idea of a concert experience,” said Hinck.
“Their idea is to play new music that is engaging, eclectic and sometimes challenging. By playing in unconventional spaces, such as warehouses or outdoor venues, they hope to attract a young, hip audience that might never set foot in a symphony concert hall.”
Members of Dekacophony are classically trained. What they have in common, Hinck said, “is a passion for playing new and obscure music that most audiences would never hear.”
