TURNERVILLE, Ga. – Authorities are investigating the death of a former state senator and her husband.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead said Friday agents are on their way to the home of Nancy Schaefer and her husband, Bruce. Bankhead says the two did not die of natural causes.
Schaefer was a Republican who represented a north Georgia district. She was a prominent conservative known as a vocal opponent of abortion and same-sex marriage.
State Rep. Rick Austin announced Schaefer’s death to a packed House chamber Friday night and led lawmakers in a moment of silence.
