Raise a toast to Moustache Friday

Mustachioed men will unite in nine local bars tonight for the fifth annual Moustache Friday celebration. Everyone else is welcome, but the drink specials are only for men sporting the definitive facial hair.

“A lot of people take their moustaches seriously, and this night is for them,” said co-organizer Chris Eves.

Begun as a bet, the first Moustache Friday consisted of only a handful of friends, but the celebration has grown each year, according to organizers. In 2009, record numbers of moustaches were seen throughout the city, with as many as 75 moustaches being photographed during the event.

There is no competition, and no prizes are awarded during Moustache Friday, always the fourth Friday in March.

“The moustache is its own reward,” said co-organizer Tim Medlin.

JJ’s Bohemia will be party central, with opening and closing events: the traditional group photo at 8 p.m., then a concert by Up With the Joneses, Ghost Finger and the Nim Nims at 10 p.m. ($7 cover). Limited-edition T-shirts will be available while supplies last.

In the meantime, mustachioed partyers can crisscross downtown and the North Shore (with designated drivers) to find drink specials at eight other nightspots.
