Tips for bathing dogs; ask an expert

Kathy Levy, owner of Bone Apetit Bakery and Groomingdale’s Pet Salon and Spa on Frazier Avenue, said there is a proper way to bathe dogs.

The following tips will help make bathing your animal easier, whether the dog likes water or not.

1. Brush the dog’s hair to remove tangles, dirt and debris. For severe matting on long-haired dogs (or for aggressive animals), see a professional groomer.

2. Place dog in sink or tub, securing with a leash if possible. A kitchen sink or laundry sink is ideal for small dogs. A bathtub or shower is good for medium and large dogs.

3. Wet your dog’s coat with lukewarm water, avoiding the ears. Add shampoo. Always use pet shampoo, as human shampoos can cause skin irritations.

4. Use your fingertips to work up a lather. Massage the skin, including hard-to-reach areas. Avoid the eyes, ears and nose. Use a damp washcloth without shampoo for these sensitive spots.

5. Begin rinsing at the base of the head using lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Check the hard-to-reach areas. Shampoo left to dry can lead to serious irritations.

6. After rinsing, towel-dry and keep dog in a warm area until thoroughly dry.

ASK AN EXPERT

Q: What food is best to feed my pet through its different life stages, and how do I know it is the best food for them?

A: A puppy or kitten, for most breeds, needs a growth and development formula until 12 months old. After a year old, switch to an adult formula. When the pet reaches 7-plus years, switch to a senior formula, which has lower calories and usually contains ingredients to support joint health in aging pets.
