First-degree murder charges against Jamaal Byrd, accused in the Feb. 27 fatal shooting at the Kanku’s on Wilcox Boulevard, were bound over this morning to the Hamilton County grand jury.

During the preliminary court hearing, defendants described the shooting, which left Terrance Etchison dead in the store’s parking lot.

The Feb. 27 incident was the second fatal shooting in six weeks at the Kanku’s, which police say is located between two gang territories.

There was a neighborhood outcry after the Feb. 27 shooting, with people who live near the convenience store telling police that it has been plagued by violence.

Store owners met with neighborhood and city leaders and also hired more security.
