A three-member panel of the City Council voted 3-0 today to uphold the firing of former Chattanooga police officer Shawn Cunningham.
Councilman Peter Murphy and Councilwomen Deborah Scott and Pam Ladd all voted to uphold the termination, according to Councilman Jack Benson, who isn’t a member of the panel but watched the proceedings.
Mr. Murphy initially made a motion not to terminate Mr. Cunningham and instead to discipline him for 28 days, but it died for lack of a second motion.
Mr. Cunningham was fired from the Chattanooga Police Department in July 2007 after an internal affairs investigation found that he failed to complete the proper paperwork for more than 60 arrests, citations and investigations over five years, according to Times Free Press archives.
In October 2007, a City Council panel voted 2-1 to uphold his firing. Mr. Cunningham appealed the ruling.
After the vote Tuesday, Mr. Murphy said he had hoped the panel could’ve come up with a solution other than terminating Mr. Cunningham.
