Pennsylvanian to wrestle for UTC

Kevin Greevy has signed a wrestling scholarship with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Greevy, a 135-pounder projected to wrestle 141, is a two-time Pennsylvania state runner-up.

He should fit right in with the Mocs, who recently had a national-high four wrestlers named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association Academic All-America team. Greevy, an honor student at Cumberland Valley High in Mechanicsburg, Pa., pared his suitors to three before selecting UTC over Bloomsburg State and Shippensburg State.

“Shawn is very good in the classroom,” Mocs coach Heath Eslinger said. “He is what we’re looking for academically and character-wise. We’re not wavering on our expectations there.

“It’s a big honor for the program to have four kids named to the Academic All-America team. The big deal with them, though, is that we don’t work on academics at all with those four,” he said. “Our goal isn’t to put together a plan that ensures academic success when the kids get here. Everyone has a plan like that. We want to recruit kids who already have an academic plan.”

Greevy rebounded from a midseason knee injury to win his district and state medals. He won two region championships and placed third in the state as a junior and second the following season. His record over those two seasons was 66-13.

He likely will redshirt this coming season because the Mocs hope to have positive news on a sixth-year appeal for former NCAA All-American Cody Cleveland.

“It will definitely help our depth,” Eslinger said. “Hopefully, Cody is coming back, but we want Shawn and (fellow 2010 signee) Cole Hayes to be working to fill Cody’s shoes when he leaves.”

Eslinger said he anticipates Baylor’s Trey Stavrum, another of the 2010 signees, settling in at 149 pounds.
