Ignition interlock bill goes to governor

NASHVILLE – After years of struggle, the House on Monday sent to the governor a bill requiring certain DUI offenders to use a device that makes sure their blood alcohol level is at a safe level before they can start their vehicles.

The bill passed on a 96-0 vote. Senators approved it last month on a 31-0 vote.

The law requires people convicted of DUI who had a blood alcohol level of at least 0.15 to breathe or “blow” into an ignition interlock that will determine their blood alcohol level before the vehicle will start.

Gov. Phil Bredesen’s office typically does not comment in advance of how the governor will treat a bill.
