Do you derby?
It’s got nothing to do with thoroughbreds and fancy hats.
This derby is all about girls on wheels.
The Chattanooga Roller Girls take on the Columbia (S.C.) Quad Squad this Saturday at the Chattanooga Convention Center.
A female-driven venture that is part show, part sport, contemporary roller derby first cropped up in Austin, Texas, in 2000. A 2009 Drew Barrymore film, “Whip It,” seems to have brought a derby surge to the United States.
The Chattanooga Roller Girls were ahead of the game.
The team began to take root in summer 2008 and grew slowly.
They played their first home bout, also at the Convention Center, in December 2009, and have since traveled to Columbia and Savannah.
The event is open to all ages.
