In a game which had already produced several momentum-shifting rallies, Boyd-Buchanan’s bats made sure there would be no late-inning drama. The Buccaneers’ final three at-bats read more like an area code (435) than a line score, as they pulled away for a 16-8 victory over Lookout Valley for the Region 3-A baseball championship.

It is the first region title in at least 25 years for the Bucs, who will now host Monterey in Friday’s sectional, while the Yellow Jackets must travel to Friendship Christian. Only the winners advance to next week’s state tournament.

“I was really proud of the fact that our kids could have folded after we got behind but they battled right back,” Bucs coach Steve Robbins said. “Offensively, once we get going the way we did tonight we can be pretty tough.”

Seven Bucs’ hitters either had extra base hits or multiple RBIs, including three players with home runs and Lookout Valley used four pitchers to try and slow the momentum. Tyler Garner’s three-run homer in the seventh capped the scoring.

“It was pretty crazy once we started hitting,” Garner said. “But we’re pretty solid up and down the lineup, and we’ve got a lot of confident hitters right now. We wanted another home game for the seniors.”
