Spring’s in full swing– and Chattanooga Market will be, too, Sunday when it’s Big Band Day.

The sounds of Sweet Georgia Sound will fill First Tennessee Pavilion for swing dancing throughout the afternoon. Marketgoers who don’t know the steps can learn them during free dance lessons led by the Swinging Lindy dance group at 1:45 p.m., according to market spokeswoman Melissa Siragusa.

Sweet Georgia Sound is a 20-piece orchestra led by Mike LaRoche. In a previous interview with the Times Free Press, LaRoche said the musicians started playing together in 1994 and evolved into the Sound by 1998.

“We’re mostly musicians with day jobs,” LaRoche joked of the professional ensemble’s roster.

The popular big band is a market regular and has played every Big Band Day the market has held, he said.
