Phillips: Thinking inside the box (set)

Have you ever looked at your music collection and thought, “Hey, I could really use a 55-disc box set of classical music”?

Yeah, me neither, but when the German classical record label Deutsche Grammophon celebrated its 111th anniversary last October, that’s what they unleashed on the marketplace.

Astonishingly, “111 Years of Deutsche Grammophon” sold out at a retail price of $170 (admittedly a steal for so much music) and is now only available used. If you’re interested, there’s someone selling one “like new” for $799 (which isn’t much of a steal).

That particular set might not tempt me, but plenty of others have. I’ve got a serious collecting bug, and I can’t stand owning just a couple of albums of an artist or having an incomplete film series. It’s all or nothing with me.

This completionist penchant has gotten my bank account into a tight spot on more than one occasion.
