The Baylor and Howard girls’ track teams got off to strong starts in their bids to claim state championships for Division II-AA and Class A/AA, respectively.
Baylor’s girls lead the overall team points standings after two athletes finished third and fourth in the pentathlon Monday afternoon at Middle Tennessee State University. Sally Warm was third overall and teammate Taylor Pannell won the high jump and was second in the 100-meter hurdles events to finish fourth overall.
Howard’s girls are in second place in team points, just 2.5 points out of first in their bid to defend their A/AA state title. Freshman LaQuisha Jackson finished third overall and freshman teammate Nuqeilla Robinson was fifth. Brainerd’s Kelli Smith finished fourth.
Smith won the long jump and finished second in the high jump portion of the event, while Robinson won the 800, just ahead of Jackson, who also was second in the shot put.
The boys’ decathlon also began Monday, and at the midway point McCallie’s Keenan Hale is third and teammate Pierce DeRico is fourth overall. Hale won the 100- and 400-meter races and Derico won the discus and was second in the 400. The final five events will conclude this afternoon as the Spring Fling gets into full swing today with games in baseball, soccer, softball and tennis scattered throughout the Murfreesboro area.
