Fling finalists

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Teams are said to learn more from losses than wins.

Because of a loss a year earlier in the same venue, the Notre Dame boys’ tennis team will be battling for a state championship today.

The Fighting Irish defeated Madison 4-0 to advance to today’s Class A/AA state final. In the process they rinsed some of the bad taste from their mouths resulting from a 4-0 loss to Knoxville Catholic in the 2009 semifinals.

Notre Dame (15-1) will join Baylor — a 4-1 victor over McCallie — as Chattanooga finalists. The Irish will face Christian Academy of Knoxville in the A/AA final at 2:30 p.m. EDT. Baylor will battle Montgomery Bell Academy for the Division II-AA title at 12:30 at Old Fort State Park.

In Class AAA, McMinn County won 4-3 over Houston High and will face Brentwood for the championship.
