MARTIN, Tenn. – The Future Farmers of America has agreed to maintain the site of a monument of former Gov. Ned Ray McWherter.
The 7-foot-tall, bronze statue is to be unveiled this fall on the courthouse lawn in Dresden.
The former governor has asked that no taxpayer dollars be used to keep up the site.
According to radio station WCMT, fundraising has surpassed the $150,000 needed to pay for the monument. The sculpture’s bronzing is expected be completed by August.
The 79-year-old McWherter was governor from 1987 to 1995 following 20 years in the Legislature.
