1,200 troops to Mexican border

Despite many varied and substantial efforts, it long has been obvious that the United States has not been effective in protecting our southern border with Mexico.

Several million people have crossed into the United States illegally. Some are docile, but many have created problems of violence, drugs and other crimes.

Despite extensive law enforcement efforts, problems persist.

So it is appropriate that President Barack Obama has finally dispatched 1,200 National Guard troops to the border, and will ask Congress for half a billion dollars to stiffen border law enforcement.

It’s long overdue. Our border areas should be safe and secure, with orderly crossings for legals, and absolutely none for illegals — whatever it takes.
