Commission approves VW site contract

The Hamilton County Commission on Thursday approved a contract to build a retention pond at the site of the new Volkswagen plant.

The commission awarded a $997,906 contract to East Tennessee Grading for the Poe Branch stormwater facility. The commission approved the contract a week early to give the contractor a head start on the work.

County Engineer Todd Leamon said the contractor will construct a stormwater retention pond between Bonny Oaks Drive and Discovery Drive.

“Our contractor is willing to move as quick as we will let him,” Mr. Leamon said. “Hopefully, we’ll have a notice to proceed within the next two weeks.”

County Mayor Claude Ramsey encouraged the commission to award the contract before Thursday’s meeting.

“It just helps handle the water off the site,” Mr. Ramsey said. “It gives (the contractor) another week of sunshine.”
