MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Brandon Lord tried his best not to sound disappointed on a day in which he had won two individual track state championships. But after narrowly finishing second in his final race, he was obviously frustrated.
Lord won the Division II 3200-meter run Friday morning in 9:36.90, then won the 1600 in the evening in 4:14.88 before finishing second in the 800.
“It was a very hard day,” Lord said. “I wasn’t as fresh at the end of that last race, but this is probably the hardest triple events to run in at the state meet. I tried to conserve energy as much as I could, then I got boxed in early in the 800, tried to kick to the finish but kind of tripped up a little at the end and wasn’t able to finish like I wanted.
“But all things considered, it was a good day.”
The heavy thunderstorms that pushed through the area Friday evening delayed start times, and it was speculated by several of the competitors to have likely caused slower times during the boys’ state meet. One day after several state records fell during the girls’ meet, there were no state records set by boys on the Middle Tennessee State University track.
