Fleischmann and Haslam

Tennesseans will be looking at relatively “short” ballots in today’s election. The voters’ choices will be very important, however.

President Barack Obama is in the middle of his four-year term, so we’ll have to wait another couple of years for a presidential election.

And Tennessee’s outstanding U.S. Sen. Bob Corker won’t have to run for another six-year term till 2012.

Able Sen. Lamar Alexander won’t have to run again till 2014.

Excellent Gov. Phil Bredesen is limited by the Tennessee Constitution to two consecutive terms, which he is now completing. So we’ll be electing a new governor.

Our excellent 3rd District Congressman Zach Wamp ran unsuccessfully for the Republican gubernatorial nomination earlier this year, instead of seeking virtually certain re-election to Congress. So we’ll be electing a new congressman.

There are eight “newcomers” asking to represent our 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

And there are 16 “newcomers” seeking to be elected governor of Tennessee.

By coincidence, the names of the most outstanding major-party candidates for both governor and Congress come first alphabetically on their respective ballot lists.

We believe the best choice for Congress is Chattanooga’s Chuck Fleischmann. He is a solid conservative, who opposes new taxes, opposes increased federal debt, opposes higher taxes and opposes ObamaCare socialized medicine. He is strongly for close adherence to the Constitution of the United States, for sound moral and philosophical standards, and for constructive efforts to generate more and better jobs for our people.

We believe the best choice for governor is Knoxville’s Mayor Bill Haslam. He has a conservative philosophy, wants to examine state government to eliminate wasteful spending, and seeks to promote more job opportunities in Tennessee by attracting new businesses and industries, while encouraging expansion of existing ones.

With constitutional government and economic development being our chief goals, we believe Tennesseans will be best served by electing Bill Haslam to be our next governor and electing Chuck Fleischmann to be our next congressman.
