NASHVILLE (AP)- Republican Bill Haslam overwhelmed Democrat Mike McWherter in the Tennessee governor’s race Tuesday as the GOP looked for big victories across the state.
Haslam, mayor of Knoxville, will succeed Gov. Phil Bredesen, a Democrat, who could not run for re-election because of term limits.
Tennessee voters also elected Congressmen and state legislators.
Turnout was spotty. There were some lines early Tuesday in Knoxville. Weather was mostly dry except for rain in Memphis and a few counties to the east.
In General Assembly races, all House seats were up for grabs as well as all Senate seats in odd-numbered districts.
