It is a relief that a terrorist plot to mail bombs to Jewish houses of worship in this country, or perhaps to have those bombs explode on the planes carrying them, appears to have been foiled. But the larger threat of terrorism sadly remains.
The bombs were sent from the Middle Eastern nation of Yemen, bound for synagogues in Chicago. The bombs were discovered overseas before they could do any damage, though some had already been transported undetected on passenger jets. U.S. officials fear that more explosives could have gone undiscovered. Time will tell.
Authorities suspect that Ibrahim Hassan al-Asiri, a 28-year-old from Saudi Arabia, made the bombs. He is believed to be hiding somewhere in Yemen. He is also suspected of being involved in the failed attempt to bomb a U.S.-bound passenger plane last Christmas.
It is clear that our nation cannot let down its guard against the radical Muslim terrorists who seek to harm our country, if not to destroy America outright. We should spare no effort to thwart the violence and brutality that fanatics hope to inflict upon our citizens and our nation.
