Woman dies in one-car crash

A Whitwell woman died Wednesday after the car she was driving went off Valley View Highway in Marion County and hit a tree.

Melissa Jackson, 39, apparently veered to the right and then may have overcorrected, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The car went off the left side of the road.

Jackson was the only person in the car. She was not wearing her seat belt, the THP reported.

Georgia man arrested in Rhea

A man wanted in Dalton, Ga., in connection with a car scam was arrested Tuesday in Rhea County, Tenn.

Charles Duncan, 48, is in custody in Rhea County and is waiting to be brought back to Georgia on charges of felony theft by conversion and felony deposit account fraud, said Dalton Police spokesman Bruce Frazier.

Dalton police issued warrants for Duncan’s arrest after investigators said he was involved in a scam to steal vehicles from car lots, Frazier said.

In August, Duncan used a bad check to buy a truck from Adventure Chevrolet at 150 W. Walnut Ave., then pawned the vehicle’s title, Frazier said. He then traded in the truck to an auto dealership in Dayton, Tenn., and bought a new Ford Mustang, Frazier said.

Duncan arranged for the dealership to pay off his loan on the truck as part of the agreement, Frazier said.

Police believe the same scam was pulled at Marshal Mize Ford and Capitol Toyota in Chattanooga, he said.
