With the United States providing more of the U.N.’s annual funding than any other nation, Americans have reason for concern when we learn that the U.N. is scouring the planet for new sources of revenue to fight “global warming.”

Here is the beginning of a recent article by The Associated Press: “A high-level U.N. panel on Friday outlined potential sources, including levies on international flights, to raise up to $100 billion a year in new money for poorer countries to cope with climate change and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.” The money would go to things such as forest preservation and, oddly, health care in poor nations.

Besides new taxes on air travel, the “high-level U.N. panel” is considering taxes on foreign-exchange transactions. It also is looking at a “carbon-pricing” scheme. That might involve a direct tax on industrial emissions of carbon dioxide – which would hurt U.S. industry and destroy jobs.

U.N. attempts to redistribute the world’s wealth as the U.N. sees fit – with much of it being lost to graft or wasted – are nothing new.

What is interesting, though, is the U.N.’s strong interest in U.S. elections. U.N. officials suggested that they are much more likely to be able to impose their new taxes if Democrats control America’s government. They feel that recent GOP gains in the House and Senate may delay the U.N.’s plans but won’t derail them, the AP article said.
