A ‘DREAM’ to avoid

Eager to enact liberal laws before a more conservative Congress is sworn in next January, Democrats are reviving a bill that would grant amnesty to potentially millions of illegal aliens.

It’s the so-called DREAM Act. DREAM stands for Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors.

Its supporters imply that it would help only illegal aliens who came to the United States as children. But in laying out the case against the DREAM Act, Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., pointed out that it would do many things to which most Americans would strongly object. Here are some of Sessions’ points:

* The act would give illegal aliens “access to in-state tuition rates at public universities, federal student loans, and federal work-study programs.” It would do that by repealing a portion of an existing federal law that rightly denies such benefits to illegal aliens.

* “Aliens granted amnesty by the DREAM Act will have the legal right to petition for entry of their family members, including their adult brothers and sisters and the parents who illegally brought or sent them to the United States, once they become naturalized U.S. citizens. In less than a decade, this reality could easily double or triple the more than 2.1 million green cards that will be immediately distributed as a result of the DREAM Act.”
