Amazon.com plans to meet its holiday retail rush a year from now with two new distribution centers in Southeast Tennessee, a company official said tonight.
Fred Kiga, director of policy for the Seattle-based Amazon, said he is hopeful of soon finalizing an agreement to build 1 million square-foot distribution centers in both Hamilton and Bradley County.
Combined, the two facilities will employ nearly 1,500 full-time employees and more than double that number during the Christmas rush for online purchases.
“The transaction is not complete,” Kiga said after appearing before the Chattanooga City Council. “There are a few obstacles to overcome, but we are very optimistic.”
Amazon plans to invest at least $91 million in a distribution center at the Enterprise South industrial park near the new Volkswagen plant, Kiga said.
The City Council agreed to forego any city property taxes on the site for the next 11 years.
