Ken Baxter

Kenneth Baxter, who died recently at the age of 80, was one of our community’s very important citizens. He was personally rather reserved by nature – but he served our whole community and our people for many years by helping “keep the lights on” for all of us.

Having graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, he later joined the Electric Power Board in Chattanooga as an electrical engineer. He rose over the years to become its general manager from 1982 until his retirement in 1996.

Baxter was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Korean War.

In Chattanooga, in addition to leading the Power Board, Baxter was active in a number of civic organizations. He was a board member of the local chapter of the American Red Cross, was active in the Rotary Club and served in several professional organizations.

He was honored by being named “Manager of the Year” in 1996.
