Ethics commission postpones probe of DeKalb County, Ala., sheriff

FORT PAYNE, Ala. – The Alabama Ethics Commission says it won’t investigate a complaint against DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris until after the General Election.

County Commission President Sid Holcomb says he filed the complaint Sept. 21 after a commission meeting when a supporter of sheriff’s candidate Lamar Bray presented allegations that Harris used the sheriff’s official website to host re-election campaign pages.

Ethics Commission General Counsel Hugh Evans says complaints filed within 45 days of an election won’t be considered.

Holcomb says he was not told of the rule at the time the complaint was filed. He says he plans to refile the complaint after the election.

Harris says he believes the complaint is politically motivated.
