Funeral set for Saturday for Baylor trainer’s wife

Janie Davis, the wife of Baylor School athletic trainer Eddie Davis, died Wednesday afternoon after a lengthy fight with cancer.

Visitation is set for 3-5 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home on East Brainerd Road and at 10 a.m. Saturday at Covenant Presbyterian Church on East Brainerd Road. The funeral serivce is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the church.

In memory of Davis, the Baylor football players will be wearing a small black heart on the backs of their helmets tonight against McCallie. The Baylor cross country runners had yellow ribbons on their shoes Thursday.

Porter breaks out

For the second consecutive season, a LaFayette running back has come out of nowhere to rank among the area’s best. Last year, senior Andre Bagley had more than 1,200 rushing yards in his first varsity action for the Ramblers. This time it’s junior Davarus Porter who is lighting it up.

The difference, though, is that Porter is the offense’s main focus under first-year coach Tab Gable, who has taken the Ramblers (2-2) rom a pure spread team to an I-formation attack. Porter has amassed 500 yards in four games, including 205 in a win at Murray County.

“He’s had some long runs, and any time he gets the ball he’s a threat to go,” Gable said. “It’s also a compliment to our line, which has started to get some continuity.”
