Tosh on tap

Hide the children.

Daniel Tosh is about to unleash his wickedly funny, obscene and pop-culture-filled stand-up routine on Chattanooga.

The Comedy Central star, who hosts the weekly show “Tosh.0,” will appear before a long-sold-out crowd at the Tivoli Theatre on Thursday as part of his 60-day, 40-show “Tosh Tour 2010: A Comedy Central Live Event” national tour.

“With ‘Tosh.0,’ Comedy Central has found a way to bring the spectacle of amateur Internet videos to television successfully,” Brian Stelter said in The New York Times last month. “Each week Mr. Tosh lines up seven or eight videos and dispenses rapid-fire ridicule, mimicking the explicit comments that riddle the same videos on YouTube.”

IF YOU GO* What: “Tosh Tour 2010: A Comedy Central Live Event.”* When: 7:30 p.m. Thursday.* Where: Tivoli Theatre, 709 Broad St.* Admission: Sold out.* Phone: 642-8497.

His television show, which averages 1.8 million viewers, attracts more viewers than the network’s “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart,” although Stewart’s show is on four nights a week rather than one.

With the shocking, often scatological humor and biting satire from its gawky host, the show is the most-watched show in cable on Wednesday nights among men 18-24 and men 18-34. Viewership in both demographics rose 98 percent from the first to the second year of his show.

Tosh, 35, recently signed to do a third year of the show, which premieres in January.

“His comedy,” said John Linn of the Miami New Times, “is full of pop-culture references and self-referential geekiness, and moves so fast it’s easy to miss a joke or three. So if you’re not quick on the Internet-style uptake, it’s easy to get lost in his act.”

On the comedy circuit for more than 10 years, Tosh, a German-born preacher’s son, has long yoked his success with Comedy Central, hosting the network’s “Live at Gotham” stand-up series and performing on “Premium Blend” and “Friday Night Stand-Up.”

He also was featured on the half-hour network special “Comedy Central Presents …” in 2002 and in the hourlong stand-up special “Completely Serious” in 2007. His premiere CD, “True Stories I Made Up,” was released in 2005 through Comedy Central Records.
