UT band pep rally today, history of rock program on Sunday

The University of Tennessee Pride of the Southland Marching Band will perform at noon today at Miller Park. The band is en route to Athens, Ga., where the football team will play the University of Georgia on Saturday.

The free mini-concert is sponsored by the Hamilton County UT Alumni Chapter and organizer Roger Woody.

“Chattanooga is home to many band members, and we’re proud to welcome them and the entire band to the Scenic City,” said Rachel Nall, Hamilton County UT chapter president.

“The event is perfect for families or if you are on your lunch break,” Nall said. “The alumni association hopes to gather a large crowd to show our support for the University of Tennessee.”

MORE MUSIC

Wendel Werner, director of the UT Singers, as well as an accomplished composer and proponent of jazz, will bring his “History of Rock ‘n’ Roll” presentation to Chattanooga on Sunday.

His presentation will start at 5 p.m. at Loose Cannon Gallery, 1800A Rossville Ave.

Werner formerly taught the course at UTK. The presentation will include details of how Chattanooga’s own music scene helped to shape music as we know it.

“Wendel’s class was my very first at UTK,” said Rachel Nall.

“He is a thrilling speaker, full of energy, laughter and love for music.”

The $22 tickets include a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres.
