Hamilton County road crews are peeling back the concrete over a sunken lane on Signal Mountain’s W Road this morning to see what problems might lie beneath.
“We’ve got a sunken place in the road there, and we’re going to open it up and see what’s going on,” said Ben Wilson, a county roads superintendent.
Crews will pour some concrete in it, and Wilson said the road should be reopened by this afternoon.
The sunken place is just below the W switchbacks and sits under a looming boulder on the side of Waldens Ridge.
Earlier this year travelers who use the road regularly complained to the road department about the area where the bluff side on the roadway was falling away and leaving four-inch to six-inch cracks. Road workers filled the cracks with adhesive asphalt, but in recent weeks the cracks gradually have reopened.
