Amish quilt secrets discussed

A lecture tonight and workshop Saturday will explore the hidden world of Illinois Amish quilts. Both presentations are by quilt expert Janice Tauer Wass and coincide with a national heritage quilt show, “Once Upon a Time,” which continues through Oct. 29 at the McMinn County Living Heritage Museum.

Wass, who lives in Vonore, Tenn., is the retired curator of decorative arts at the Illinois State Museum, where she oversaw a collection of more than 160 Amish quilts. She is also the author of “Amish Quilts: Sharing Threads of Tradition.”

Participants will learn how to expand their own quilting repertoire by applying lessons of color and composition.

The lecture is at 6 p.m. today at a cost of $5 for museum members, $10 for nonmembers.

The workshop is 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. Cost is $70 for members, $75 for nonmembers and includes a supply kit.

The Living Heritage Museum is at 522 W. Madison Ave. in Athens, Tenn. For more information, including customized tour packages for groups of 10 or more, visit www.livingheritagemuseum.com or call 423-745-0329.
