Cartoon resorts to fear tactics

Mr. Bennett’s productions are clearly the work of a liberal. His cartoon of Oct. 20 is a perfect example.

His depiction of Tea Partiers in the act of jettisoning crates of “taxes” from the good ship America is fair and accurate in and of itself. Since the founding of this great country, it has been a basic conservative principle that minimizing tax burdens helps to keep the ship America buoyant in the water and moving briskly forward under sail.

Why did Mr. Bennett choose to show these same Tea Partiers also chopping down the main mast and ripping apart the ship’s hull like a bunch of crazed vandals? Such a suggestion is absurd, unfair and totally unfounded in any fact. Our Founding Fathers advocated limited government and limited taxation just as the Tea Party movement is doing. The “tax and spend” liberals cannot cope with such archaic thinking and, like Mr. Bennett, must resort to fear tactics and name-calling.

Step to the plate on drainage issue

I am appalled at the implication of the exclusiveness and ” special privileges” the Chattanooga Times used to describe the private golf club’s water project. The city is very fortunate that the club is willing to pay a large share of the cost because:

1) Rain water that drains through the golf course begins its journey through the city’s storm water system from distant Dallas and Duane roads and Minnekahda Place down Hixson Pike, eventually dumping into the river.

2) Excessive rainfall has flooded the golf course numerous times in the past years, causing the management to alter the direction of play. Many days six holes are removed from play.

The city probably should pay for the cost of repairing the drainage ditch/system since it goes through private property. For years, I have observed the deterioration of the rock walls and concrete bottom that make up the present drainage system. I suggest the council look at the problem instead of firing from their council seats and worrying unnecessarily about the bid process. The city has been ignoring the problem for decades and should step up to the plate and help with the project instead of massaging and wanting to control it.

Prayer foes should find way to do good

As a Christian, I am offended that the “Freedom from Religion Foundation” is taking it upon itself to bully people into believing in their “freethinking” ways.

Many things “offend” me, not just as a Christian, but as a person, and if I feel it’s deviant, I’ll take a stand. Other times, I’ll change my radio station, TV station, turn my head or close my ears.

So, may I be so bold as to ask Ms. Gaylor of FFRF and others in her foundation to consider taking it upon themselves to actually do some good in society: fight to end childhood hunger in the U.S., help people find jobs in a slumping economy, help put child molesters behind bars for good.

Could prayer ever hurt someone? In a world where things are uncertain, prayer brings comfort, unity, and yes, it may even prevent an injury during a football game!

I hope that school officials and students in Hamilton County will stand up and fight for the right of free speech! In the words of my pastor husband, “Can I get an amen?”

Soddy-Daisy team can use your help

After 14 district championships, 11 region championships and seven state championships, Soddy-Daisy’s girls’ softball team is finally getting something they have deserved — their own softball field.

After years of leaving campus to head to Soddy Lake for practice and games, this spring Soddy-Daisy girls can walk behind the school to play on their very own softball field.

The field looks great and is on its way to becoming the best high school softball field in Hamilton County. The school system provides the funds for preparing the site, dugouts, electrical work, plumbing, sod, sprinkler system and fences. Donations of materials and services have been made to build the press box and concession stand. Lights have been donated and will be put up in November.

However, there are other things, such as bleachers, a mower and other maintenance equipment, still needed to complete the field for the opening game.

If you think, like I do, that Soddy-Daisy girls deserve a top-notch softball field and you would like to donate to help complete purchasing the rest of the equipment needed, send your donation to Soddy-Daisy Softball Boosters, c/o Clifford Kirk, Soddy-Daisy High School, 618 Sequoyah-Access Road, Soddy-Daisy, TN 37379.

Vote yes to ensure right to hunt, fish

Many unsuspecting voters may overlook a very important item on our ballots this fall — a constitutional amendment that will guarantee our personal right to hunt and fish in Tennessee.

When you go to the polls to elect a new governor, vote “yes” indicating that you support the preservation of this valuable right. Regardless of whether or not you are a hunter or fisherman, you benefit from millions of dollars of revenue that these activities bring in.

Those of us who engage in these activities are concerned about the preservation, conservation and promotion of the natural resources alive in our great state as well. I cannot (begin to) tell you about the invaluable personal growth, camaraderie and multitude of other benefits that come as a result of being a lifelong outdoorsman.

Even if you do not hunt or fish, please vote “yes” to ensure the right of future generations in Tennessee to do so.

Conservative values confuse Democrats

What is it with liberals who cling to socialist ideology with a proven history of failure? Cuba is a good recent example.

Unable to comprehend conservative values, liberals have to resort to labeling their opposition as Nazis, racists, haters, fearmongers, extremists, and then try to denigrate their sources of information.

I would respectfully characterize liberals as, sadly, confused.

Our country is burdened with unprecedented national debt, costly enforced health care, paper tiger foreign diplomacy, and led by an apologetic, anti-private sector president who thinks you have made “enough” money.

What’s more scary or extreme than that?

Wolfe provides stance on issues

Republicans aren’t stupid. They’re not going to vote for someone just because there’s an “R” by their name. They will want to know who’s representing them, what they’re going to do and how they’re going to do it.

Chuck Fleischmann doesn’t respect the electorate enough to share those details with us. For example, he says he wants to partially privatize Social Security. How much of it, Chuck, 1 percent or 99 percent? And what’s your plan if the stock market crashes? He won’t say.

John Wolfe tells you exactly where he stands on jobs, the economy, health care, Wall Street, etc. It’s all on his website.

I am indignant that Fleischmann thinks he can win to represent me and 660,000 others in my area, just because it’s a red district. I am left to assume that he’s not bright enough to discuss the issues so very important to our lives, and therefore is a puppet — and I don’t know who’s pulling the strings.

Very disconcerting.

I won’t vote for the guy who won’t talk to me. I’m going to vote for the guy who gives me his stance on the issues. That would be John Wolfe, a man of the people, not big business.
