Monday through Friday at 2 p.m., Times Free Press Sports Editor Jay Greeson offers his 2:00 drill – a quick look at what’s happening right now and what’s on tap for tonight in the world of sports. Check back tomorrow morning for five at 10.
And then there was one
It’s the final Friday night of the high school football regular season in Tennessee. Get all the scores here at timesfreepress.com tonight. Get all the big plays, stats and stars in tomorrow’s Sports section. Here’s what the 2:00 Drill is looking for tonight:
– How do the five area teams that have to win to get to the playoffs react tonight?
– How will the teams that are locked and loaded for the postseason treat this final tune up?
– And most importantly, how will the seniors of the teams that have been eliminated go out in their final games?
It’s an emotion night for sure, but it’s one that will last forever in the hearts and minds of a lot of people. Enjoy.
Saturday night’s all right for fighting
The college football schedule is awesome this week. From big games involving area teams, including Tennessee going to South Carolina and Georgia facing Florida, to big games in the SEC – seriously, Ole MIss may end Auburn’s dream season – to huge games of national interest, there’s something for everyone. The 2:00 Drill is planning on going to Finley Stadium and seeing the Mocs for the first time as a fan. Hold off your jokes – the Drill has seen them dozens of times as a matter of work, but this will be the first time as a spectator. Even going to take Mrs. Drill and the Drill Bits. Come join us.
Fantasy Island
Huge response (thanks mom) from last week’s fantasy football tips, so thought we’d offer a few options this weekend. And no, this is not, hey start Peyton Manning, we’re going to at least try to give you some options that may or may not be obvious.
– Play any Pittsburgh Steeler on your roster against the injury-ravaged Saints that allowed 30 points to lowly Cleveland last week. Plus the game figures to be a shootout in which lots of players get lots of points.
– Play Ryan Torain, the Redskins running back who figures to get a lot of work – and success – against Detroit.
– Play every Colts receiver with exception of injured tight end Dallas Calrk and retired wide out Marvin Harrison. The Colts have not been swept by a division foe since 2002, and after Houston smacked Indy around earlier this season, the tables figure to turn Monday night. Plus, it’s always cool to have a couple of guys going on Monday night to end the week.
(And by the way, I would still start Manning this week).
