Extend our delightful Riverwalk

One of Chattanooga’s many appealing public amenities is the Riverwalk, which extends from downtown along the southern bank of the Tennessee River to Chickamauga Dam.

It is a scenic path for walkers, runners and bikers, with plenty of flora and fauna.

Our Riverwalk reminds us somewhat of the very popular, and much more developed, pedestrian path in San Antonio. But although Texas is noted for things big, its walking path parallels the San Antonio River, which is — well, un-Texas-like — in that the “river” is only a few feet wide in places, in contrast with our broad Tennessee River.

Some local Riverwalk enthusiasts who think “big” would like to extend the path from downtown Chattanooga along the Tennessee River bank to John Wilson Park at the foot of Lookout Mountain — and eventually up the mountain near Lula Lake, past Covenant College, along Scenic Highway and further into mountaintop Georgia.

The Lookout Mountain Conservancy has been very active in the area.

It’s ambitious to think about the Riverwalk going from the Tennessee River up the mountain and far into Georgia.

But people in our community long have been doing big and wonderful things.
